I’m writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed north Burnham Strip parking lot and crosswalk project near Sam’s Restaurant, planned by the San Mateo County Harbor District on the historic Burnham Strip in El Granada.
This plan would:
Disrupt traffic flow by increasing pedestrian crossings on Highway 1
Obstruct iconic ocean views and degrade the natural landscape
Permanently alter one of the Coastside’s most valued open spaces
Potentiallly allow bright parking lights all night long in sensitive habitat and our neighborhood
The Burnham Strip is not just land—it’s a vital piece of our community’s history and identity. It offers scenic views, coastal character, and a natural buffer that defines El Granada. Paving over it for parking and potential tour buse parking threatens the very qualities that make the area special.
I respectfully urge you to:
Support west side of highway one parking solutions only
Preserve the Burnham Strip as designated open space
Ensure that any future plans prioritize public input, scenic protections, and compliance with zoning and park guidelines
Please help protect this rare and irreplaceable space. Once it’s paved, it’s gone—for good.
